A Funny Way To Reach The World!
In 1977, a germ of an idea to reach children with the Gospel message through animated characters was born at the fledgling Christian Broadcasting Network. Now, more than 25 years later, CBN is the world leader in Bible-theme animation programs for TV.
The first efforts, SuperBook and The Flying House, released in 1982, were a tremendous success with both children and parents as an alternative to the valueless programming most networks were providing for children at the time.
"Animation is the perfect TV tool for reaching the world with our message. Each program is easily adapted to a new language and culture with just a few good voices and a week of time. " Michael Little, President, CBN
Today, the award-winning Storyteller Cafe series has captivated children and adults throughout the world, bringing biblically based values to hundreds of millions. Through the use of state-of-the-art, 3-D computer animation (the type used in the Academy Award-winning Shrek), CBN's Angela Costello and her staff are bringing Bible stories to life and touching lives in 114 countries and in 60 languages!
When broadcast throughout Russia, 13 million viewers of SuperBook wrote letters asking for literature on the life of Jesus. In Cambodia, a government-sponsored program is using SuperBook to teach English to children in the country. Recently, the University of Southern California requested copies of all the animated products in the CBN library to use in a Bible study course. In Vietnam,
5,000 SuperBook videos are being distributed in 16 provinces. And, in China, Storyteller Cafe is a major hit with both parents and children.
Angela says, "CBN works hard to see that the voice-over talent is careful to try to time their words to the movement of the characters mouths. This way, we can make sure that people all over the world are given the Gospel message in a language they can understand. "Also," she continued, "in foreign countries, we often have to obtain government approval for our programs to broadcast. They see the quality of animation and that builds a bridge that allows us to present the Gospel in restricted places...after all, it's just a cartoon, right?"
Angela says the industry has found there is a new audience for animated features every four years. As children grow, there is a brand new audience ready to soak in the Word in this unique ministry. She also says that we, at CBN, like to think our products are an "instrument of peace" in a violent world for both adults and children.
What's next? There is a brand new program on the horizon; it is a version of the biblical David and Goliath, featuring all the Storyteller Cafe characters in a classic version of a great, good versus evil tale from the pages of the Old Testament. Through the support of CBN partners, Angela Costello and her team of animators are reaching children and changing lives with every episode.
